Summer Youth Employment Program for Older Youth

SYEP Older Youth is a unique six-week city wide paid youth workforce program. The YM-YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood host two cohorts. Cohort A begins July 6,2026 and Cohort B begins July 13,2026. Participants can earn an hourly wage and will be paid weekly based on attendance. Participants payment method options are a debit card or with a direct deposit to a bank account of their choice.

 

At the Y, we provide an extensive range of job opportunities across various sectors, including Healthcare/Medical, Childcare/Summer Camp, Retail, Food Service, Administrative, Social Services, Sports & Recreation, Customer Service, Media & Communications, and much more. We encourage our participants to fully engage in applying for these positions and developing their professional skills. This is also a fantastic opportunity to network with staff and fellow co-workers in their desired industry. It’s their chance to begin forging meaningful connections!

About SYEP Older Youth

The Y’s Summer Youth Employment Program for Older Youth (SYEP OY) is a New York City Department of

Youth and Community Development (DYCD) program that connects New York City youth between the ages

of 16-24 with career exploration opportunities and paid work experiences each summer.

Every year, the Y welcomes 900 youth to benefit from workforce development program that offer hands-

on-exposure, paid internships, work experience, access to job skills training, and opportunities to develop

social, civic, and leadership skills.

 

The goals and objectives of SYEP Older Youth are to:

 

  • Empower and prepare youth with money management (e.g., budgeting, opening a bank account).
  • Develop social skills including communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  • Enable youth to acquire good work habits and develop employment-related skills.
  • Understand career pathways and make decisions in career advancement.
  • Build professional networks.

 

The SYEP Older Youth model a six-week career learning experience. Participants will have worksite monitors

assigned to them to ensure they are provided with support throughout the summer and process their

timesheets/timecards, evaluations, surveys and overall well-being at their placed site.

Hourly Payment as of Jan 2026: The SYEP OY participants will be paid $17.00 per hour for 25 hours max weekly during this six-week internship.
