Y SONYC Afterchool Program @ Harbor Heights

The Y’s SONYC After-School Program at Harbor Heights Middle School is a New York City Department of Youth and Community Development funded program that serves 90% middle-school students, most of whom are recent arrivals from the Dominican Republic and other Spanish-speaking countries.

Working closely with the school, the Y’s SONYC After-School Program at Harbor Heights Middle School provides its participants with a high-quality program that is anchored on a Project Based Learning framework that allows students to select the types of activities they wish to enroll in.

The program offers advisories, academic tutoring, counseling, and enrichment activities, such as art, dance, journalism, film, creative writing, theater, STEM, and music engineering.

Our students also embark on early college discussions via our CUNY Explorers partnership, where participants visit college campuses and attend live classes virtually.

Students also engage in career exploration discussions through our guest speaker series, where experts from diverse fields and backgrounds speak with students about their educational and career journeys.

The Y’s SONYC After-School Program at Harbor Heights Middle School is proud to be one of the few schools selected by the prestigious Big Brother Big Sister organization to operate Bigs in Blue that connects the local 33rd precinct with the students in a mentor-mentee relationship.

The program is open to Harbor Heights Middle School students and runs Monday through Friday during the school year, from  2:30 – 5:30 p.m.
