The Y will begin to feature some of our outstanding volunteers in our new “meet our volunteer” series. Volunteers are crucial for the Y to be able to bring our members and guests high-quality programming each and every day. For our first feature we will hear from Yolanda who works at our coffee hour program at the Wien House.
How did you hear about volunteering at the Y? I learned about volunteering from the Y from TimeBank, another organization I was part of. Currently I am a volunteer for the Coffee Hour program at the Wien House.
Why did you decide to volunteer at the Y? TimeBank contacted me about it and asked me if I would be willing to help the older adults with the Coffee Hour program at the Y, so I agreed. I also know some of the Wien House residents.
What are some of your duties as a volunteer? I help to set up the tables and chairs and set out the snacks. I also assist with signing in the residents, scans their cards, and serves them food and drinks.
What have you learned from your experience here? I am enjoying my time volunteering with the Wien House residents. I also find it interesting to talk with and spend time with people from different backgrounds and different experiences. Even though there are differences between us, I feel that they’re friendly and inviting.
Would you recommend volunteering for others and if so why? I would absolutely recommend volunteering. It’s been rewarding for me to spend more time with others and helping with activities. I am glad I discovered this opportunity.
