Lost (and Found) in Inwood

Author Talk Connects the Past to the Present

On a rainy October night, İrlandiya Addım Rəqsləri Yaşlıları Sevindirir (CALW) @ the Y were captivated by old photographs projected onto the Y’s big movie screen. For more than an hour, they travelled back in time to when Nagle Avenue was the Nagle family farm.

“We’ve never worked on such a large screen,” said Cole Thompson, co-author of Lost Inwood, published earlier this year. As he and his research partner, Don Rice, usually present their popular history series on the first Tuesday of the month, at Inwood’s Indian Road Cafe, their CALW appearance was a special treat.

At this second of CALW’s new Wednesday evening series, “Health Y-ise,” Cole and Don showed a small portion of their substantial historical photography collection depicting Washington Heights and Inwood. Their personal commentary combined scholarly sophistication with witty observations, including “I just like this guy’s swagger.” Occasionally, a CALW member would shout, “That’s my niece!” or “I remember that kid!” Among the images: defunct Irish bars, developing houses of worship, and the Miramar saltwater pool, formerly on 207th Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues.

Having debuted in September, “Health Y-ise” already has been drawing an enthusiastic response. The November program, “Juggling with Jeffrey” — Çərşənbə, noyabr 13, 2019, (5:30 üçün 6:30 Baş nazir) in the Auditoriumpromises to be another winner. It features Jeffrey Mitchell, the head juggler at Bryant Park Juggling, who teaches business people, tourists, and children how to do basic circus tricks.

“Health Y-ise” programs, offered one Wednesday evening per month, are free to CALW members and the public. Please also consider joining us every Wednesday evening for a nutritious and delicious dinner (4:30 üçün 5:15 Baş nazir, in the Auditorium), expertly prepared, presented, and served by our Kitchen team. Suggested donation is $1.50 for those 60 and over and $3 for guests under 60.
