May brings another year of celebration of the great victory of anti-Hitler coalition in World War II. Every year the Y welcomes those Russian veterans who fought and survived those times. They wear all their awards, combat medals;the tables are decorated by the traditional red carnations; familiar moving songs of the war years fill the room, memories are being shared. Unfortunately, fewer remains of those who took part in this most destructive and bloodiest war in the history of mankind. Every year, there are fewer chairs around the table; stories are shortened and the list of those who are no longer alive is longer.
This year is very special in world’s history: 70 years have passed since the May Day 1945, when Nazi German signed the capitulation documents. For Russians, the war was and remains sacred, they named it “The Great Patriotic War”. Chairman of the Local Council of Veterans of the Great Patriotic War, the war pilot Vladimir Gudkin, helped to organized the meeting , inviting not only the veterans, but also those who have survived the terrible war years, those who traded their adolescence to hard work rebuilding the destroyed cities; those who lost their loved ones and simply those who miraculously survived.
One of the Y oldest veterans is the 95-year-old Michael Feigin – fought in the famous battle Stalingrad, was awarded many medals “For courage”, “For Military Merit”, “For Defense of Stalingrad “,” For the defense of Kiev, “” For the capture of Kenigsberg “,” For Victory over Germany “… By looking at the awards , one can trace the war. When asked about his war experiences, Michael avoids talking about hardships of the war but mostly he remembers the morning of seeing The Spangled Banner on the other side of the River Elbe, Germany through the heavy cloud of tank dust. Not knowing what to think of it, Michael reported the sight to his superiors, witnessing the US troops advancing to the right bank. That was the day Soviet and American troops crossed and merged, reaffirming the determination of the three allied powers to end the Second World War and to destroy the Third Reich.
Despite his respectful “golden” age of 95, Mikhail is in good spirit and health. He attributes this to his long life best friend, personal doctor, and beloved wife Ida of 50 years. He says that it is forever grateful to his dear friend, personal doctor, his beloved wife Ida , who in turn claims that her happy life resulted only from her patient, supportive and loving husband, Michael. Ida’s story of a survivor is a powerful testimonial of courage and perseverance. As a teenager, she lived and survived two and a half years of brutal Seige of Leningrad. She always remembers how the meanings of the words’ food ” மற்றும் “delicious” were foreign for her… One day, she recollects, she was hypnotized by seeing a frozen little yellow pea under the dirty ice, and while happily imagining the taste of it in her mouth, she saw a boy who was already working his way of trying to thaw the ice and reach that pea with his fingers..On the photo below; a Russian Council Representative is giving a newly designed medal to commemorate the 70 th Anniversary to Michael

День Победы – праздник со слезами на глазах
9 мая мы празднуем великую победу стран антигитлеровской коалиции во Второй мировой войне. Ежегодно в организации YM & ஆம் (или просто Y) района Вашингтон Хайтс и Инвуд, на самом севере Манхэттена,встречаются ветераны – те, кто “мечом и оралом” приближал Победу. В этот день здесь по-особому торжественно: ветераны надевают все свои награды, боевые ордена и медали; на столах – традиционные красные гвоздики, звучат хорошо знакомые всем песни военных лет, фронтовики делятся своими воспоминаниями… К сожалению, всё меньше остаётся тех, кто принимал участие в этой самой разрушительной и самой кровопролитной войне в истории человечества. С каждым годом за столами всё больше свободных мест, всё короче рассказы, всё длиннее список тех, кого уже нет с нами. Что ж, время берёт своё… Нынешний год – особый в послевоенной истории: прошло 70 лет с тогомайского дня 1945 года, когда был подписан Акт о капитуляции фашистской Германии. Для россиян эта война была и остаётся священной, Великой Отечественной. Председатель местного Совета ветеранов ВОВ, участник боёв, военный лётчик Владимир Гудкин, пригласил на встречу 25 человек – не только бывших фронтовиков, но и тех, ещё живых, свидетелей грозных лет, в чьей судьбе война оставила неизгладимый след: кто пережил Ленинградскую блокаду, кто подростком работал в тылу, помогая фронту, чьи родные погибли или же, наоборот, чудом спаслись…Один из старейших ветеранов, 95-летний Михаил Фейгин, – танкист, участник Сталинградской битвы, кавалер ордена Отечественной войны II степени, награждённый многими медалями: “За отвагу”, “За боевые заслуги”, “За
оборону Сталинграда”, “За оборону Киева”, “За взятие Кенигсберга”, “За победу над Германией”… Вот так, по наградам, можно проследить его боевой путь. Он сдержан, немногословен, не любит рассказывать о военных
трудностях и невзгодах, зато хорошо помнит то утро, когда сквозь густое облако пыли, поднятой гусеницами танков, они увидели на другом берегу Эльбы полосатое знамя. Не зная, что предпринять, они сообщили
командованию. А в это время на понтонах на правый берег реки уже переправлялись танки союзников…
Для своего почтенного возраста Михаил вполне бодр и в хорошей форме. Он говорит, что обязан этим своей дорогой подруге, личному врачу, любимой жене Иде, с которой они вместе вот уже 50 лет. А Ида уверяет, что держится благодаря мужу, его терпению, поддержке, пониманию. Подростком она пережила блокаду Ленинграда, уцелела, но хорошо помнит, как непонятен ей был тогда смысл слов “кушать” и “вкусно”. Однажды она увидела вмёрзшую в грязный лёд жёлтую горошину, которая просто загипнотизировала её, она думала только о том, как сейчас положит её в рот…но какой-то мальчик, опередив её, уже пытался растопить ладошкой лёд…
Присутствующий на празднике сотрудник Российского консульства вручил всем участникам встречи памятные Медали в честь 70-летия Победы.
