The Y and the Sports for Youth Initiative

Every year the UJA-Federation of New York hosts an event for their Sports for Youth initiative and the Y was excited to accept an invitation to this year’s luncheon honoring Howard Katz, COO of NFL Films and SVP of NFL Broadcasting.

The Sports for Youth initiative recognizes the healing power of physical activity. Their projects enable all children to enjoy sports, regardless of their ethnic or religious background, their age or athletic ability. This year’s Sports for Youth Luncheon brought in over 300 attendees from the sports business world and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.  This money is then awarded to various agencies, such as ours, to bolster sports programs.

Michael Fermaglich, the Y’s COO who attended the event said, “Every year since the Sports for Youth program’s inception twelve years ago, the Y has been the recipient of an award. That funding helped build our climbing wall, purchase gymnastics equipment, resurface our gym floor, install gym divider curtains, and install fiberglass backboards and a volleyball system.” Sports for Youth projects have enhanced our offerings beyond the physical walls of the Y as well. At camp, awards helped purchase our climbing tower and multi-purpose sports court, our 2 gaga courts, and all of the equipment that we use to teach sports.

We wouldn’t be able to offer as many rich opportunities for our community without the generous support of the UJA’s Sports for Youth initiative. Michael continues, “This type of funding allows us to provide programs in updated facilities at affordable fees for our community.” Thank you UJA-Federation of New York!
